Accessibility statement

This site is meant to work for everyone who votes here

WCAG 2.2 Level AA is treated as a launch blocker on this project, not an aspiration. If something here does not work for you, that is a defect and we want to hear about it.

What is in place

  • Every page works with a keyboard alone. Focus is always visible, and a skip link is the first thing you reach.
  • All interactive targets are at least 44 by 44 pixels.
  • Every text and interface colour pair is checked against WCAG 2.2 AA by a script on every build. Gold is never used for body text because it does not pass.
  • Content is real HTML. Nothing on this site requires JavaScript to read — including the assistant page, whose twelve core answers are written into the page source.
  • Form fields have real labels, not placeholder text pretending to be labels. Errors are announced.
  • The Neighborhood Atlas has a full text equivalent listing every place, so it is not a picture you must be able to see.
  • prefers-reduced-motion is honoured everywhere. No animation is required to understand anything.
  • The page language is declared, headings are in order, and no information is conveyed by colour alone.

What is tested, and how

axe-core runs against every route in continuous integration. Any issue rated serious or critical fails the build. Playwright checks keyboard-only completion of the volunteer form and that no page overflows horizontally at 390 pixels. A manual screen-reader pass is on the pre-launch checklist — automated testing catches perhaps a third of real accessibility problems and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

Known gaps

  • The site is currently English only. The architecture supports a language toggle and Spanish is the first planned addition, given the community. Nearly half of Mountain House residents were born outside the United States and a monolingual campaign site is a real limitation, not a cosmetic one.
  • Photography is not yet in place, so alternative text for community images has not been written and reviewed.
